Effects of Walking P rogram Using P edometer on Lower Ex tremity Strength and Balance for 40s Adults

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of walking activity on the muscular strength and balance.

Method : Subjects were taken 35 people in their 40 years who have low physical activity and lived in Ulsan. The program consists of pre-test, normal walking for 7 days, accelerated walking for 30 days and post-test. We checked their normal daily number of walking for 7 days with pedometer. Then, the subjects increased the number of walking by about
70%. We conducted the following tests: calf muscle strength test, sit and standing, one leg stance test, timed up & go test, functional reach test.

Results : After accelerated walking activity for 30 days, the participants showed signi- ficantly improved physical ability in those tests (p<.05). The Pearson correlation verification showed positive correlation between
the number of walking and calf muscle strength.

Conclusion : Exercise walking can improve the muscular strength and balance. In addition to that, a hurt from a fall and cardiovascular disease are efficiently prevented by exercise walking. Walking is very economical and convenient exercise and can contribute the well being of people in an aging society.
